Santa Barbara Veterans Day Half Marathon

Saturday, November 12, 2016 • Santa Barbara, CA • Course Map

activeregisterKnown for its gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and the signature Spanish Colonial architectural style of many of its buildings and homes — which has been featured in countless movies, from the 1967 Dustin Hoffman classic The Graduate to 2009’s It’s Complicated — Santa Barbara offers both natural and man-made scenery aplenty at its annual fall half marathon.

The half marathon — which had just over 2,200 finishers in last year’s race — features a course that starts just past the mid-way point of the full marathon, and joins up with the 26.2-mile course around the 2 1/2-mile point of the half.

Runners in the half marathon will run a brand new race, now starting at the UC-Santa Barbara campus. Runners will begin underneath UCSB’s Henley Gate and run onto Highway 217. They will then make their way towards the Las Positas Valley as they enter the Mesa community which overlooks the American Riviera.

Runners will spend a large portion of the race on Modoc Rd. which runs next to Highway 1. Then they will make a sharp right onto Highway 225, running through the beautiful sights of Elings Park. The final 3 miles of the race are run along the coast to through Leadbetter Beach Park where finish line festivities will be held.

Overall, the course is fast with a downhill start and gentle rolling hills for the first 10 miles before a climb up Cliff Drive. This beach to beach course is all new in 2o15 and is perfect for casual runners or those with a competitive edge.

This race was the worst organized race. Distance was off by almost 1/4 mile too long, not enough water stops at all, website is a mess and not updated for current year, no race medals, friend won his age group and got a t shirt from last years race. For the price paid for this race I expected a lot more. Very very disappointed. Will never run this race again. The money we paid better have gone to the veterans.
