Featuring a course that starts in the shadow of the Jasper train depot along the banks of the Patoka River and finishes in the shade in the parks on the banks of the same river just a stone’s throw away, Jasper’s Heartland Half Marathon is set to make its 6th annual running on Labor Day weekend.
Organizers say the course will be “very fast,” and the elevation profile certainly bears that out — from the starting line elevation of just over 450 feet above sea level, the course rarely rises much above that throughout the 13.1 miles of the half marathon, with the exception of a few hilly stretches just after the mid-way point of the race along St. Charles Street.
After runners pass through the middle portion of the race, the course largely flattens out again on the way to the finish line.
Runners will start the race at the Spirit of Jasper Train Depot on Mill Street overlooking the river, and from there follow what is mostly a clockwise route through Jasper’s downtown and around the outskirts of the city.
While the first half of the race features a number of stretches through residential neighborhoods, the second half offers the more scenic terrain, as the course takes runners past Calumet Lake and along the Jasper Riverwalk in the last mile and a half of the race, along the paved pathways that wind alongside the Patoka in to the finish at the Dave Buehler Plaza.
