Details
More than 10,000 runners crossed the finish line in all of the race
events combined at the spring 2009 running of the Bath Half Marathon
and Bath Half Fun Run, which takes runners on a double-loop
out-and-back course that winds its way along the city streets that
border the River Avon, which snakes its way through this English city's
downtown neighborhoods. Runners can expect a race course filled with
gorgeous natural scenery thanks to
the river as well as the majestic and impressive stonework architecture
for which the city is known around the world, including Bath Abbey, The
Circus and Royal Crescent terraces, and the famous hot springs and spa
baths, some of which date back to the time of the Romans.
From the start and finish line in the race "Runner's Village" area
under the gantry on Great Pulteney Street, participants head out in a
wave start beginning at 11:00 AM onto Pulteney Road, which takes them
on a long curving southward-trending road around the bend in the river
to the turn onto Broad Quay, which takes them across the river and into
the City Center. Runners then turn left and follow Green Park Road as
it turns into Charles Street, on their way toward Bath's Queen Square,
which is now the home of the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific
Institution, founded in 1824.
Along the early and middle portions of the race route, runners will
pass by or near many of the city's most notable sights and attractions,
including many art galleries and museums, the Roman Baths, the Jane
Austen Centre and others. And you'll likely find much of the city
scenery familiar if you've seen films like 2008's "The Duchess,"
starring Kiera Knightley, or 2004's Reese Witherspoon-led "Vanity
Fair," both of which were
filmed in Bath.
The race course features four long stretches along the banks of the
River Avon, as runners make the trek along Upper Bristol Road,
Newbridge Road and Lower Bristol Road on their way out and back along
the river twice during the double-loop race. Once they've finished the
second lap along the river, it's back for the return along Pulteney
Road to the start/finish area on Great Pulteney Street.
Described as fast and mostly flat by the race organizers, this nearly
30-year-old race draws thousands of runners and spectators to an
already densely populated city center area, so organizers ask that if
you cannot finish the 13.1 miles of the half marathon within 3 hours,
that you move to sections of the roadway that permit auto traffic to be
re-opened, or board the shuttle bus which will be provided to pick up
runners who cannot complete the course within the allotted time.
