Event Details

The windswept coastal roadways of this northwest England town play host each spring to the annual running of the Blackpool Marathon & Half Marathon, which saw just over 1,600 runners cross the finish line in both races combined at the race's April 2009 running, with nearly 1,000 of those finishers running in the half marathon alone. Conditions were bright and sunny for this year's running, which featured its start and finish areas at the Hilton Hotel in Blackpool's North Promenade area, for a race that includes long stretches along the seashore.

The course for the race takes runners south from the hotel along the coastal road (A584) down all the way to the St. Annes Old Golf Links, part of the Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club, where the PGA Tour's David Duval captured his first and only major championship victory in the 2001 Open Championship. From there, once around the turn, runners make their way back northward through the city toward Little Bispham, and then heads back toward the hotel for the finish line.

Because so much of the course runs right alongside the sea, runners can expect a fast and largely flat race, as the elevation for the race route never strays far above sea level. Other sights along the race course include Blackpool's Golden Mile, Winter Gardens and the North Pier.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the coast of the Irish Sea in northwest England, roughly 65 km west of Manchester and roughly 325 km from London, the city of Blackpool typically experiences weather like that of many English seaside towns, which is to say plenty of cold and windy conditions in the winter months and milder weather in the summer, but considerably cooler on average than areas further south. In April, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 11°C and 4°C, while precipitation amounts average around 2.2 inches (usually making April among the driest months of the year).
