Event Details

One of Great Britain's largest and most popular half marathon events, the Bristol Half Marathon has been a fixture on the athletic club calendar here in this southwestern England town for more than 20 years since 1989, when roughly 1,000 runners took to the streets of Bristol for its inaugural running. Since then, the race's popularity has boomed and organizers expect an estimated 20,000 runners to sign up for its 2009 running.

Though the race course was still being finalized by race officials at this writing, it is expected to include many of the familiar and favorite sights that have made up the route in past years, including stretches that incorporate Bristol's Harbourside areas as well as the spectacularly beautiful Avon Gorge area (through which the River Avon makes its way). Also along the race route will be passes under Brunel’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Runners can expect to encounter paved surfaces along the streets and roadways in and around Bristol throughout the race, and most of the course lies at or near sea level. An out-and-back loop course around the city, the race offers what race organizers say is "great potential for fast times," something that no doubt was part of the appeal for world-class runners like Paula Radcliffe and Haile Gebrselassie, who have run in the race in past years.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in southwest England near the mouth of the River Severn, which empties into the Bristol Channel, about 170 km west of London, the city of Bristol typically enjoys some of the sunniest and warmest weather in Great Britain, with an average annual temperature of between 10°C and 12°C. In September, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 18°C and 12°C, while rainfall totals average just over 2.5 inches for the month.

Fees

£30 for the general public
£28 for members of any United Kingdom Athletics-affiliated running club
£15 for runners and walkers over age 60 on the day of the race
