Event Details

Situated on the banks of the River Thames, which flows through the Cotswolds region and stretches from here all the way east to Oxford and London, the small English town of Crickdale plays host each year to the annual autumn running of the Crickdale Half Marathon, 10K & Fun Run, which marks its 30th anniversary in 2009. Described by past participants as a race with a fast and mostly flat course through this rural corner of Britain, the race attracted a field of just over 630 runners at its 2008 running, with just over a third of the field taking part in the 13.1-mile half marathon portion of the race.

The largely out-and-back course for the race -- its starting and finish lines lie just down the road from one another -- begins at St. Sampson's Junior School in Cricklade, just off Bath Road. From there, runners head west and then south along High Street and Chelworth Road, following the course as it winds its way roughly westward along the B4040 highway. Runners cross over the Thames at the bridge near the intersection with Waterhay, and then continue along westward and northward along Happy Land, turning right onto Rixon Gate.

The race route makes a loop around Wickwater Lane and Fridays Ham Lane, taking runners for a brief stretch along the edges of the Cotswold Water Park. Once they turn onto Spine Road, runners have made the turn and have begun the trek back along the course to the finish line, veering from the course they've just run for a brief stretch along Waterhay and then merging back with the first half route at Chelworth Road.

Runners follow along Fiddle, Maimesbury Road and High Street before turning left onto Bath Road, which takes them in toward the finish line at the Cricklade Leisure Centre. Along the way, runners will pass many of the town's most notable sights, including the St. Sampson's Church (which dates back to the 13th century) as well as the natural scenery that gives the town its charm, including number of streams and open fields and meadows.

In addition to the half marathon, the race organizers also host a 10K race (which drew just under 250 finishers in 2008) and a 1.5-mile "Fun Run," which is open to both children and adults.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled among the southern England region known as the Cotswolds, about midway between the towns of Cirencester and Swindon in Wiltshire, the small town of Cricklade experiences weather much like its neighboring town of Swindon, which typically sees average monthly temperatures ranging between 13°C and 7°C in October. Rainfall is always a possibility, especially as the weather turns cooler this time of year.

Fees

£8.50 for the half marathon
£7.50 for the 10K
£3.50 for the 1.5-mile Fun Run
