Event Details

Just over 2,100 runners crossed the finish line at the spring 2009 running of Britain's annual Asics Fleet Pre-London Half Marathon, which has become something of an athletic institution in this small town that lies roughly 50 kilometers outside London in southern England. Begun in 1982 by the Fleet & Crookham Athletic Club as a warm-up race for the London Marathon later in the spring, the race has since become one of England's many highly popular half-marathon running events, and has welcomed as many as 4,000 runners in the past (though now organizers limit the race to 2,500, due to the limits of what the race course in Fleet can handle).

The out-and-back loop race begins on Leawood Road near Fleet's Calthorpe Park, where runners make what organizers call the race's "starting loop" around the park and then out onto Crookham Road, beginning the roughly counter-clockwise loop around the course as it winds its way along the outskirts of Fleet, along a mixture of in-town urban as well as rural, country roads. A large part of the race is run along roads that parallel farm fields outside town, and take runners along tree-lined roadways especially in the race's second half.

Runners pass by a number of locally notable sights which double as excellent viewing areas for spectators, organizers note, including the Oatsheaf crossroads in the race's first mile, the De Havilland Arms around the mile 5 marker, and the Queens Head pub near Dogmersfield House, whose history dates back to the time of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. The last 100 yards or so of the race feature a finishing stretch all on the grassy meadows of Calthorpe Park.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled among the mix of rural and suburban towns to the west of London in southern England, the town of Fleet experiences weather much like that of its much larger neighboring metropolis, with plenty of rain throughout the year and cool to mild weather conditions in the early spring. In March, the town's average monthly temperatures range between 11°C and 3°C.
