Event Details

Known through Britain's athletic and running community as the oldest half marathon in the United Kingdom, the Freckleton Half Marathon & 2-mile Fun Run offers a course with plenty of natural scenic beauty and oftentimes challenging conditions, as the wind has blown in from the nearby Irish Sea in several races in past years, making for some challenging running conditions against the wind. And with its out-and-back loop course that starts and finishes on Bush Lane in Freckleton, the race features some uphill and downhill stretches alternating through the first 10 miles or so of the race, followed by a nice, long gradual downhill over the race's last couple of miles.

From the starting line just off Bush Lane, runners follow what is largely a counter-clockwise route through the countryside and along the roads that connect the villages surrounding Freckleton. From the village, the race's estimated 700 or so runners each year head north along Kirkham Road to Hillock Lane, where they turn left and then head toward Bryning Lane, where they turn right and head north toward Wrea Green. The field then turns left onto Moss Side Lane, and heads all the way westward toward the Lytham Greene Drive Golf Club, where they run along the eastern edge of the golf course and then head south.

After turning left again onto Preston Road (which becomes Lytham Road as the race route heads toward Freckleton), runners begin the final couple of miles into the finish, which unfold over a most welcome gradual downhill stretch. All participants should keep in mind that race organizers maintain a cutoff time of 2 hours, 40 minutes, to ensure that runners don't lollygag their way around the race route.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the northwestern coast of England, near the city of Preston and a short drive north from Liverpool, the village of Freckleton typically experiences weather conditions much like nearby Preston, with plenty of cloudy skies and rain throughout most of the year. In June, the area's average monthly temperatures range between 17°C and 11°C.
