Event Details

More than 3,800 runners crossed the finish line in the 13.1-mile event alone at the spring 2009 running of the Hastings Half Marathon & Mini Run, which Runner's World magazine has called the best half marathon in the UK in recent years. Run along an out-and-back loop course through this historic city in southeastern England, the race celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2009 with brilliantly sunny weather and temperatures that reached 18°C, a combination that no doubt helped the race achieve its highest number ever of finishing runners.

The race's start and finish line are one and the same, and lie near the city's waterfront overlooking the English Channel. From there, runners head out on Sea Road and then turn left onto Grosvenor Crescent, which takes them westward toward Bexhill Road. Runners then follow the course in a clockwise direction as it makes its way roughly in a circular direction around the city, turning onto Harley Shute Road, Crowhurst Road and Queensway on the way up toward the intersection with the road known as The Ridge. The runners then turn right and head roughly southeast along The Ridge, all the way down to the intersection with the A29 and Harold Road.

From there, runners make the last few miles back into the finish at the starting area, and by the time they reach the end they will have run the route traced by William the Conqueror towards Battle, around the back of town and down toward Hastings' famous "Old Town" and fishing willage area. Race organizers say the course is "tough" for the first few miles, along which runners can expect to encounter some significant hills and changes in elevation; over the entire 13.1 miles of the race, the course rises nearly 140 meters above sea level, from start to finish.

The last few miles as runners head toward the seafront, however, are a nice reward for the race's second half, as they flatten out and include only a few brief downhill stretches. And for runners who aren't quite ready to take on the half marathon, the event also offers a 2.5-mile "Mini Run," which runs entirely along the Hastings seafront.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the coastline of southeast England and located just over 100 kilometres from London, the city of Hastings typically sees milder and sunnier weather conditions than areas further north in the UK, though rainfall is always a possibility throughout the year in England. In March, the area's average monthly temperatures range between 9°C and 4°C.
