Event Details

Mostly flat with the exception of a single hill around the mile 9 marker, the annual Newark Half Marathon & Family Fun Run takes runners on a course that blends intown urban neighborhoods with the open air of the rural country roads outside this mid-sized town that lies in central England and has played host to this 13.1-mile race event ever since its inaugural running in 1982. After ups and downs in runner attendance and spectator popularity through the decades -- it once attracted more than 2,000 entrants -- the race in recent years has enjoyed an upswing in runner entries once again, as more than 860 runners crossed the finish line at the race's summer 2008 running.

It isn't hard to see why, the race organizers note, as the course that runs through and around the town of Newark-on-Trent offers mostly gentle, forgiving terrain throughout the race. From the starting line on Appleton Gate near the city center, the race route takes participants on an out-and-back loop course that runs in a largely counter-clockwise direction through and around the outskirts of the town, around Grange Lane, Staple Lane and Hollowdyke Road around the edges of the nearby town of Balderton.

Runners will cross the A1 highway a couple of times through this portion of the race (which also contains what past participants say is its only significant hill), but will stay mostly on less-traveled roads for the rest of the route.

Along the race route, runners will see a number of examples of the historic and beautiful architecture for which the town is known, including Newark Castle, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, the Market Square and the flowing waters of the nearby River Trent. The later stretches of the race offer a more pastoral blend of scenery, as the village areas give way to wide-open green farm fields and tree-lined country roads, before bringing runners back into Newark for the finish line ceremony at Market Place.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled among the Nottinghamshire countryside of central eastern England, the town of Newark-on-Trent typically experiences its warmest and most benign weather conditions of the year in July and August, and past years have seen plenty of sunny conditions during the race. While rainfall and clouds are always a possibility year-round, they occur less frequently this time of year. In August, the town's average monthly temperatures range between 20°C and 11°C.
