Event Details

Open to runners, joggers and walkers and featuring a race route that takes participants through the farmland areas and along the suburban and rural roads of this town just outside London, the St. Albans Half Marathon, 5K & Children's Fun Run typically draws a field of more than 5,000 every summer for a race that raises money for a range of charities, most notably the British Heart Foundation. Begun in 1982 as solely a 13.1-mile "mini marathon," the event has grown over the years and now includes a 5K for runners, a 1.5-mile children's "fun run" and the 1K Healthy Hearts Jog around St. Albans' Verulamium Park, for participants who'd like to take part in the event but aren't ready for the other races.

From the starting line at Verulamium Park near Holywell Hill in St. Albans, the half marathon race takes runners and walkers on an out-and-back course that travels first northward and slightly eastward. Runners leave the park along the park road and turn right onto Hemel Hempstead Road, and then head north toward the Batchwood Golf and Tennis Centre.

They then continue north along Batchwood Drive to Beckett's Avenue, where they turn left and begin a short loop that takes them around the edges of the golf and tennis centre, and then puts the field back out onto Hemel Hempstead Road. The course next takes runners southward all the way down to the intersection with Bedmond Lane, where the route then turns off to the left for a second, and much larger, loop along Potterscrouch and Ragged Hall Lane.

Runners continue as the road becomes Chiswell Green Lane and takes them into the village of Chiswell Green, where they make two left turns to complete the eastern portion of the second loop and then head back out onto Ragged Hall Lane. The home stretch of the race returns the field back onto Potterscrouch Lane and crosses the M10 highway, retracing earlier stretches of the race route on the way back to Verulamium Park for the finish.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the southern Hertfordshire region of England, just over 20 miles north of London, the city of St. Albans typically experiences weather conditions much like that of its neighboring metropolis to the south, which is to say it generally sees plenty of rainfall throughout the year and mostly warmer temperatures than areas further north, thanks to both its latitude and its proximity to the city. In June, the area's average monthly temperatures range between 18°C and 9°C.
