Just over 1,500 runners crossed the finished line along the windswept
southeast England coastline at the summer 2008 running of the Southend
Half Marathon & BTMK Fun Run, which take runners for long
stretches along the seashore in this double-lap race at
Southend-on-Sea, a seafront resort community that plays host each year
to visitors from around the United Kingdom and Europe, who travel there
to visit the town's theme parks, aquarium and cliff gardens, among its
other attractions.
The race starts and finishes near East Beach Shoebury, taking runners
out along Blackgate Road, High Street and Campfield Road before turning
onto B1016 highway for the first of two laps that take runners on the
main stretch of the race, the double lap portion along the seafront.
Runners who've taken part in this race in past years say it's generally
well-organized with plenty of spectators along the race route, and
features a nice, fast and flat course (thanks to its location near the
water) that makes it suitable for setting personal record times.
Along the race route, runners will be able to catch glimpses of what
make Southend-on-Sea such a popular tourist destination, including the
1.33-mile pleasure pier which you can walk or ride the train to the
end, as well as the Pier Museum and Adventure Island park. And for
those who want to take part in the race but aren't ready for the half
marathon, runners can participate in the 3 km Fun Run, sponsored by
BTMK Solicitors.

Weather & Climate
Nestled along the shoreline of north side of the Thames estuary,
roughly 40 miles east of London, Southend-on-Sea is a resort community
in southeast England that enjoys typically milder and sunnier weather
conditions than areas further north, and the early summer (the start of
the vacation season) is no exception. In June, the area's average
monthly temperatures range between 19°C and 10°C.
