Event Details

One of two half-marathon events that take place in September in this English city that lies just outside London, the Windsor Half Marathon welcomed more than 4,300 runners across the finish line at its fall 2008 running, along a course that takes the field along the famous Long Walk in Windsor's Great Park. One of the region's true treasures of garden landscape architecture, the park encompasses more than 5,000 stretching from Windsor Castle in the north to the town of Ascot in the south, and the entire race takes place within the park.

The race's start and finish line lie at the Double Gates along the Long Walk, and the course unfolds along an out-and-back double-loop course. The first of the two loops is the inner loop, and takes runners along a four-mile stretch along the hilly, undulating terrain along tree-lined trails and meadows. The second is the longer loop, a 7.5-mile run that takes runners around the Great Meadow Pond near the center of the park, and finishes back near the hospitality area at the Double Gates.

Runners follow a clockwise direction around each of the course's two loops, and organizers say that the 2009 course is thankfully less hilly and challenging than the course used in past years, which means that runners can expect to run somewhat faster times. Along the way, the scenery along the course offers plenty to take your mind off the run. The sweeping lawns feature a widely varied landscape, from gigantic old-growth oak trees and wooded forest areas to wide-open grassy meadows, and plenty of wildlife with great herds of deer.

Organizers start runners off in the Windsor Half Marathon at 1:00 PM, and the event also includes the 2.5-mile Glynn Shefford Memorial Run and the Sprite Sprint run for kids.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central southern England, in the suburban areas just over 40 kilometers west of London, the city of Windsor typically experiences weather conditions much like those of its much larger neighboring city to the east, which means that rainfall is always a possibility, with relatively warm but milder conditions in September than earlier in the summer. In September, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 19°C and 10°C.

Fees

£21.50 for members of United Kingdom Athletics-affiliated running clubs
£23.50 for non-members
£5 for the Glynn Shefford Memorial Run
