Details
Runners get a chance to trek through the fields, glens and rural roads
of the Irish countryside right in the center of the country at the
annual running of the Longford Marathon, Team Relay & Half
Marathon, which takes place in the town by the same name that sits near
the geographic center of this island nation. Open to runners, walkers
and wheelchair competitors, this race features an out-and-back course
that starts and finishes near Longford's Market Square on Ballymahon
Street, and takes participants out along a combination of town center
streets and quiet country backroads.
More than 900 runners, walkers and wheelchair competitors crossed the
finish line in all races combined at the event's summer 2008 running
(with more than 500 of those completing the half marathon), a number
that has been growing steadily over the last few years as the race's
popularity in Ireland has risen.
While past years have seen many
volunteers and onlookers cheering participants on near the start/finish
area, some past participants say the race can get lonely out in the
middle stretches of the course, as there are often few spectators to
speak of out there. Still, all report the race is a model of
friendliness and hospitality, and the race organizers plan to have
local musicians out to play for runners to cheer them on and inspire
them toward the finish.

Weather & Climate
Nestled in the heart of the northern half of Ireland, about halfway
between Galway and Dublin, the town of Longford typically experiences
weather much like that of the rest of the country's interior, which is
to say plenty of clouds, occasionally cold conditions, misty rainfall
and sometimes sunny breaks in the clouds. In August, the town's average
monthly temperatures range between 17.7°C (64°F) and
10°C (50°F).
