Details
The spring of 2009 brings the inaugural running of the Wexford Half
Marathon and Relay races, which will take both runners and walkers on a
scenic view of the town and its surrounding environs here on the
southeastern tip of Ireland, along a course that features plenty of
views of the waters of the Wexford Harbor as well as the rural
countryside just outside town. This 13.1-mile (21.1 km) race is limited
to 1,000 entrants for its first running, and organizers plan to
arrange a grandstand area for spectators, so friends and family can
cheer runners on in a stadium-like atmosphere at the finish line.
The race will begin across the River Slaney from Wexford in the village
of Ferrybank, from which runners will start an out-and-back loop that
takes them across the bridge into Wexford Town and then for a stretch
along Paul Quay and Trinity Street, through neighborhoods including The
Folly, Maudlintown and Rocksborough. Following what is roughly a
clockwise loop through the areas just outside town, runners continue on
along R730 all the way down to Sinnotstown, turning right once they
reach Sinnotstown onto St. Martin's Terrace for the portion of the
course that makes the turn westward.
From there, the course continues on westward and then northward,
through Clonard Road and Meadowlands up toward Wexford General
Hospital, where runners then turn left and head out towards the Belmont
roundabout, which puts the field onto the N11 for the stretch up towad
the river. Once they hit the river, runners then turn right and begin
heading eastward back toward the town center, along Redmond Road and
then Main Street for the race finish near the quays.

Weather & Climate
Nestled along the southeastern coast of Ireland, about 138 kilometers
south of Dublin and a ferry ride from Wales in the U.K. just across the
Irish Sea, the town of Wexford lies in what the Irish call the "sunny
southeast," thanks to the fact that it receives more sunshine on
average each day than most of the rest of the country. Though it
receives plenty of rain year-round, Wexford typically sees less
snowfall than regions further north, and January and February are
typically its coldest months, while July and August are typically its
warmest. In April, the town's average monthly temperatures range
between 11°C (51°F) and 6°C (42°F),
while local rainfall amounts average about 51 mm (2 inches) for the
month.
Fees
€48 for the half marathon
