Set for its 6th annual running this year through the streets of “the Duke City,” as Albuquerque is known, and along the river that flows right through the heart of the city and gives the race its name, the Rio Grande Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk offers runners the chance to participate in a race that benefits Special Olympics New Mexico.
Runners will start and finish the out-and-back course for the race at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, which seeks to preserve and promote Hispanic contributions to the arts and humanities through programs and performing arts series staged throughout the year.
Located on 4th Street overlooking the Rio Grande, the center serves as both the starting and finish lines as well as the race awards ceremony, which starts at 9:30 AM after the race.
The starting time for the half marathon is scheduled for 6:30 AM to give runners enough time to complete their 13.1 miles before the heat of the day sets in, as runners will spend much of the race out in the open sun, away from shade and tree cover.
All runners who cross the finish line in the half marathon will receive a finisher’s medal, organizers add, and both the male and female winners of each race will receive a free pair of Mizuno running shoes.
