The annual springtime running of the Ohio River Road Runners Club Marathon & Half Marathon features an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at the Xenia YMCA on East Church Street and takes the field through downtown.
The race features a long, straightaway stretch out to the turnaround point for the race and back, along a converted railroad trail that now is used by walkers, bikers, inline skaters and runners from around the local area.
Runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes are all welcome to compete in the half marathon — the marathon is open to runners and wheelchair athletes only — and walkers are permitted to start their race early in advance of the 8:30 AM official race starting time.
The terrain for the race takes the field across a combination of paved surfaces along city streets and bicycle paths along the rails-to-trail portion of the course.
A smaller and more low-key race compared to some of the other big-city metro area races around the state, the ORRRC Marathon & Half Marathon saw more than 1,200 runners cross the finish line in both races combined in 2016.
Past participants describe it as a mix of a relatively easy and relatively level course with a few stretches through wooded bicycle paths and along rural country roads that feature a few hills here and there.
