Runners get the chance to run the mostly flat, fast terrain of Eugene’s biking, walking and running trails at the Eugene Holiday Half Marathon & Hustle 10K and 5K, which marks its 5th annual running in 2016 after last year’s race saw more than 400 runners cross the finish line in all three races combined, including 232 finishers in the half marathon alone.
The race unfolds along the Fern Ridge Path, a nearly 7-mile-long paved path that winds from the Meadowlark Prairie Trailhead on Green Hill Road into the area known as the West Eugene Wetlands, where runners will see ponds and trees and forests and hills, and continues all the way to the eastern end of the trail near West 15th Avenue and Polk Street.
The western sections of the trail feature wide-open views of prairie and wetlands areas just outside the city, with bridge crossings over creeks and railroad crossings, while the eastern end of the trail offers more urban surroundings, as it winds along Amazon Creek between forested residential neighborhoods on one side and commercial districts on the other.
All three races — half marathon, 10K and 5K — share the same starting and finish line, at the Lane County Fair Grounds. From there, the course first heads west on the Fern Ridge Path, taking runners all the way out to the race’s half-way turnaround point, just off Green Hill Road and Royal Avenue.
Once runners make the turn, they head west and retrace their steps along the path they’ve just run until they make their way all the way back, following the Fern Ridge Path along Amazon Creek for the next several miles.
After runners make it further away from the start, the race turns from a more urban setting to a more natural one, as the city gives way to the open prairie and native wetlands of the West Eugene Wetlands.
There really aren’t any major hills along the course; it’s more of a gradual downhill descent between the starting line and the turnaround; after that, the course follows a very gradual uphill back in to the finish line at the Lane Events Center.
