Run along the streets and bike trails of this eastern Pennsylvania city on the banks of the Schuylkill River, Pottsville’s Sol Lipton Run Fest features a 13.1-mile half marathon, a 5K run and a 1.5-mile fun run, all of which support the Sol Lipton Memorial Scholarship Fund to provide scholarship money for college to local high school student athletes.
The city also is home to the brewing operations for Yuengling, the nation’s oldest brewery, whose history dates all the way back to 1829.
The routes for all three events start and finish in downtown Pottsville, with the starting line at the corner of East Norwegian Street and Progress Avenue, and the finish line just a couple of blocks away near the intersection of Centre Street and Laurel Boulevard.
From there, runners in the half marathon follow a winding out-and-back route through the city that takes them on a westward loop out toward the communities of Marlin and Branch Township.
Runners can expect two varieties of surfaces over the course of the race — paved city streets for most of the course, and bike trails along the Pottsville bicycle path in the middle portion of the race, just off York Farm Road and 16th Street.
The course follows a number of twists and turns through this stretch, including a section along 1st Avenue up to the retirement community there and back, and then out onto 16th Street and Peacock Avenue for the last few miles back into downtown for the race finish.
