Event Details

Runners get the chance to trek along the shore of Douglas Island, just south of downtown Juneau, at the annual running of the Southeast Road Runners Club's Frank Maier Marathon & Half Marathon, which follows the moderately hilly highway along the Gastineau Channel and features views of the nearby Mendenhall Glacier and the Juneau Icefield as well as the nearby mountains, forests and the waters of the canals and channels fed by Pacific Ocean just offshore.

Both the half and the full marathons in this event start at Sandy Beach in Savikko Park on Douglas Island, which lies just south of the city, and follow out-and-back routes along the northern edge of the island along the Douglas Highway. Except for the moderately hilly terrain along the route, there are no significant elevation changes to speak of, as the race is run at about sea level -- those running the half experience an overall elevation gain of about 75 feet, while those running the full will climb a maximum of about 150 feet.

Just under 170 runners completed both races combined at the race's 2008 running, with an estimated 48 runners crossing the finish line in the full marathon and 119 completing the half marathon (also called the Douglas Island Half Marathon). The two races feature separate starting times, as the full begins at 7:00 AM while the half marathon begins at 9:00 AM -- runners who expect to finish with slower starting times in either race are welcome to start an hour earlier. A post-race barbecue is also held for all participants, starting at 10:45 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along the glacial areas in Alaska's southeastern corner, at the base of Mount Juneau and about 30 miles east of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, the city of Juneau typically experiences milder weather than the state's interior, as summertime weather conditions bring plenty of sun as well as rain. In August, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 63°F and 48°F, while precipitation totals average around 5.37 inches for the month.

Fees

2009 fees: $17 for pre-registered runners
