Event Details

Appropriately named for the steep uphill climbs and the hilly ridge terrain runners trek across in the middle portions of the race, the Two-Way Torture Test Half Marathon is a unique race for a couple of reasons -- there's no entry fee, and race participants run the race as two-person teams running the course in opposite directions, with each team member passing the other on the 13.1-mile route along the Chena Ridge, just outside Fairbanks.

The teams of runners start their race at the city's Pump House Restaurant on Chena Pump Road, and then follow the ridge in opposite directions -- one runner in each team runs the southwest portion of the ridge, while the other runner heads out along its northeast section. Along the way, participants run through gorgeously scenic areas of the countryside just outside the city, as the nearby Alaska Mountain Range, the Tanana River and the Tanana Valley provide beautiful vistas along tree-lined roads, bike paths and bridges over creeks through this mountainous area.

After running the challenging uphills and often bumpy terrain along the Chena Ridge, runners have a long downhill stretch in toward the finish line back at the restaurant. Typically a fairly small race, the Two-Way Torture Test fielded 29 teams of two runners each at the event's spring 2008 running, with finishing times of just under three hours combined for the top-placing team to nearly six hours for the final finishing team.

Race Weather & Climate

Home to some of the coldest and harshest weather conditions anywhere in the United States, the city of Fairbanks has a subarctic climate and typically experiences long, bitterly cold winters with temperatures that can reach 60 degrees below zero and summer seasons that sometimes bring snow and storms. In the mid- to late-spring, however, area conditions are generally milder, as May temperatures average between 61°F and 35°F, with precipitation totals that average just over half an inch for the month.
