Event Details

An all-new race that will have its inaugural running on Arizona's road race calendar in the late winter season of 2009, the Arizona Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay will take runners, walkers and joggers through the area of the Phoenix metropolitan area known as the West Valley, past several of the city's most popular sporting venues, important cultural and historical sites and tourist attractions. The race's 13.1-mile half marathon follows a point-to-point course that features mostly moderate, rolling hills with only a few significant uphill and downhill stretches, though nothing that's overly challenging for most runners and walkers.

The half marathon begins at the half-way point of the full, 26.2-mile marathon course, near the Wigwam Country Club on East Wigwam Boulevard. From there, runners will follow a clockwise direction along the course, traveling along West Wigwam Boulevard and West Camelback Road toward the community of Litchfield Park, before turning north onto North Litchfield Road on the way to North Glendale Avenue. The stretch along N. Glendale Avenue follows a long straightaway, taking runners across the Salt River toward the finish line in front of the Glendale Arena and Cardinals Stadium complex, which served as the venue for the 2008 NFL Super Bowl.

Along the half marathon route, runners will have a chance to see many of the Glendale-Phoenix area's most noteworthy sites, especially the golf courses and resort areas of Litchfield Park and the atheltic complexes used by Major League Baseball's Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds for spring training games.

Mostly gentle rolling hills are the feature of the race's first two miles, followed by the course's first significant hill at approximately the third mile marker, when the course rises from its low of around 1,013 feet above sea level to its peak of about 1,085 feet above sea level, which it reaches between miles 7 and 8. After the eighth mile marker, the rest of the course is mostly flat or slightly uphill toward the finish line. To take advantage of the day's best weather conditions, all three events in the race are scheduled to start at 6:30 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

A suburban community of the Phoenix-Tempe metropolitan area that's located just a 20-minute drive northeast of the downtown Phoenix area, Glendale tends to experience weather conditions much like those of its larger neighboring cities, with very hot summers and mild to cool winters, and little rainfall throughout the year. In February, average monthly temperatures range between 71°F and 43°F, while rainfall totals average just under an inch for the month.
