Event Details

With the more than 34,000 runners and walkers who come out to run in the "Valley of the Sun" each January, the P.F. Chang's Arizona Rock and Roll Marathon & Half Marathon is doubtless the state's premier marathon road race event. An urban race that takes participants through the city streets of Phoenix on a largely eastward route towards the finish line just outside Papago Park in nearby Tempe, the "Rock & Roll" marathon & half-marathon lives up to its name with bands playing at every mile marker along the course of both races.

This is an excellent race for first-time marathoners and half-marathoners, thanks to both its largely fast and flat point-to-point course and the music and teams of cheerleaders stationed throughout the race to pump runners up with that little bit of extra enthusiasm. The half marathon shares the same starting line and time as the full marathon, at Wesley Bolin Plaza in downtown Phoenix, and follows the full marathon course for the first 2 miles until reaching the intersection with McDowell Road, when the half marathon splits off and turns right toward the east.

The course then runs for a long, mostly straightaway course along McDowell for the next several miles, with the exception of a turn to take runners past Coronado Park. After that detour, runners return to McDowell for the run into Scottsdale and Papago Park, where they run past the edges of the park and cross the river over into Tempe for the finish line and concert.

Due to the popularity of this event's half marathon (more than 24,000 runners registered for the half in the 2007 race), organizers have adopted a wave start to allow plenty of room for all runners at the starting line and along the course throughout the race. All half-marathon participants will still have 4 hours to complete the race, and the starting time for each won't begin until the shoe chip crosses the starting line.

Race Weather & Climate

Participants should expect cool weather conditions at the start of the race, and for temperatures to gradually warm up through the day. January temperatures in the Phoenix area average between 65°F and 43°F, while rainfall amounts average less than an inch for the month.
