Details
Expect a challenging, hilly race at the aptly named Rim Country
Challenge, whose half marathon and 5K races take runners on a course
that definitely isn't fast or flat -- "don't expect
to set any speed records," add race organizers. From the starting line
at Rumsey Park in west Payson, Ariz., the half marathon follows an
out-and-back loop course along plentiful rolling hills through the
city's residential neighborhoods.
All along the 13.1-mile half marathon course, runners will see a
combination of the scenic mountain ranges (including White Mountain and
Snowstorm Mountain) and mesas nearby, and should expect two significant
hills. The first, a nearly half-mile-long elevation gain of 165 feet,
occurs in the second half of the race near the Payson Airport, while
the second is a drop of about 210 feet near Vista Road.
The race terrain is paved surfaces throughout the course, which also
contains very few flat stretches of any length. The elevation for much
of the race is 5,000 feet above sea level and above, so runners should
arrive prepared for higher-elevation runs in their training for the
race.
The town of Payson, the areas around which are known by locals as "Rim
Country," sits in very nearly the geographic center of the state of
Arizona, and lies just minutes from the Tonto National Forest, a
popular recreational attraction for hiking, horseback riding and other
outdoor activities. The city's famed rodeo is considered the oldest
continuously-operating rodeo in the world (by locals, at least).
