Details
Now one of the races in the Arizona Road Racers' Grand Prix of Running
Events series of races, the Tour de Pee Vee Half Marathon takes runners
on a tour of this city near Prescott and just to the southwest of
Flagstaff, and just 100 over miles south of the Grand Canyon. The race,
which also includes a 10K, a 5K and a 2-Mile walking event, is run
entirely on paved surfaces through the city, and starts and finishes at
an elevation of about 5,145 feet above sea level.
The 2007 running of the race saw 118 runners cross the finish line in
the half-marathon (out of about 250 runners total who competed in the
three races), which is certainly the most challenging of the three, for
its elevation changes as much for its distance. This out-and-back race
starts and finishes near the East Arch of Prescott Valley's Town
Center, which lies near the Chamber of Commerce building, and takes
runners on a tour of the city as well as its outlying areas --
including Mountain Valley Park and a nearby dormant volcano named
Glassford Hill.
During the race's first
two and a half miles, participants experience a roughly 300-ft.
elevation drop, followed by a hilly two miles between mile markers 4
and 6. The course makes a gradual climb during the next three miles as
it makes its way into the nearby upper valley area, followed by another
(more gradual) downhill stretch toward the finish line back in town.
