Details
A rarity among half marathon running events, the 13.1-mile race in the
Tucson Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay follows an almost all
downhill course from its starting line just north of the Tucson
metropolitan area to the finish line at Coronado School Neighborhood
Park on Wilds Road. This point-to-point race is run entirely on paved
surfaces, following Arizona Route 77 south to Hawser Road, where it
turns into a nearby neighborhood on Golden Ranch for the finish.
The race, which is sponsored by Damascus Bakeries, follows the final 13
miles of the full marathon course, which starts on Cody Loop Road to
the east. On an interesting note, the half-marathon start lies just a
few miles from Biosphere 2, the self-contained center for the study of
Earth's atmosphere, its living systems and its surface, funded by the
University of Arizona.
For both races, the race course unfolds in the shadow of the nearby
Santa Catalina Mountains, whose Catalina State Park and other nearby
parks like the Coronado National Forest are popular recreational
getaways from the heat of the city in the summertime, for their hiking
trails and pools.
