Details
Formerly a road race that took place on mostly paved surfaces in and
around Jonesboro's Craighead Forest Park, the Fergus Snoddy Half
Marathon changes to a trail race event in 2008 and has been renamed the
Fergus Snoddy Trail Half Marathon & 4-Mile Trail Run, dropping
the 5K race of the past two years for a four-mile trail run as the
shorter race in the event. Though the race has changed its terrain,
much will remain the same, including the scenic views runners will get
of the park trails and the surrounding hills of Crowley's Ridge in this
part of northeastern Arkansas.
The race starts and finishes in Craighead Forest Park, located just a
few miles south of downtown Jonesboro off South Culberthouse Road.
While the elevation in the city proper and much of the surrounding area
is mostly flat, runners will experience significant and challenging
hills and a number of elevation changes as they climb up the area known
as Crowley's Ridge, in which the park lies. The park
includes more than 10 miles of rocky dirt trails criss-crossed with
tree roots and streams in many spots, which add to the challenge
as runners trek through the Craighead Forest woods.
Just over 250 runners crossed the finish line at the race's 2007
running, which included the half-marathon and a 5K race. The 2008
running of the event will feature a four-hour time limit for runners in
the half, which means that participants will need to keep a pace of
18:30 minutes per mile or better.

Weather & Climate
Located in the northeast corner of Arkansas, across the Mississippi
River and about 70 miles northwest of Memphis, Tenn., the city of
Jonesboro normally experiences mild-to-moderate weather in the
early fall, with temperatures averaging between 49°F and
74°F in October. The city also experiences moderate rainfall
this time of year, averaging
nearly 3.9 inches of precipitation for the month.
