Event
Details
Race organizers say they expect an estimated 15,000 runners, walkers
and wheelchair competitors to trek through the downtown city streets
and neighborhoods of Arkansas'
capital city at the 2010 running of the Little Rock Marathon, Half
Marathon, Relays & 5K. With its large field,
occasionally hilly course that takes runners across the Arkansas
River and runs through both the cities of Little Rock and North Little
Rock and more than 20,000 spectators lining the streets to cheer the
runners on, the race has become the state's most popular road race
running event.
The out-and-back course for the half-marathon race starts and finishes
right on the riverbanks, not far from the Clinton Presidential Library,
at the corner of Sherman and Markham Streets (also called President
Clinton Avenue). From there, the course winds along mostly flat and all
paved terrain, along city streets including Kumpuris and East 3rd
Street bhefore turning onto Broadway, which takes participants across
the river and over into North Little Rock.
On the way across the bridge, runners can look into the outfield stands
of Dickey-Stephens Park, the new home of the AA-level Arkansas
Travelers minor league baseball team. As they make their way around
this section of the city, the race route turns on 7th, Main and
Washington Avenue before turning onto Riverfront Drive
for a stretch of the race along the North Little Rock side of the
river. The field then follows Riverfront as it curves around Karrot
Street and then back onto Broadway for the second trip across the
bridge, and back over into the city of Little Rock.
Back over on the Little Rock side of the river, the course features
longer straightaway sections of several blocks each, along 3rd
& Scott Streets, Capitol Avenue and Center Street, before
heading past the campuses of Arkansas Baptist College and Philander
Smith College. Once the course makes its way past Philander, runners
are hitting the last couple of miles of the race, which takes them
along Chester Street and La Harpe Boulevard for the finish on the
riverfront.
