Event Details

Nearly 400 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined at the early fall 2009 running of Fort Smith's River Valley Run Half Marathon & 5K, which takes participants on an out-and-back loop course just to the southeat of downtown through historic Fort Chaffee, which served as a military base dating back to the early 1940s and was the site of Elvis Presley's induction into the army in 1958, and later served as the filming location for movies such as Biloxi Blues, A Soldier's Story and The Tuskegee Airmen.

Sponsored by locally based Western Arkansas Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization, the race marked its second annual running in 2009, and featured its starting and finish line on Fort Chaffee redevelopment land, near the intersection of Veterans Boulevard and Fort Smith Boulevard. From there, runners follow a counter-clockwise loop route that takes them out along Wells Lake Road, Custer Boulevard, Taylor Avenue and then back around toward the start along Fort Smith Boulevard.

After making their way back near the starting line, runners make the same loop again for the second half of the race, which is run entirely on paved surfaces and takes the field through a combination of forest lands, base buildings and structures, and wide-open fields. Though the course has a few flat stretches, it also features some significant hills, particularly between the start and the second mile marker, which runners will repeat in the race's second loop.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the Arkansas-Oklahoma border in the westernmost part of the state, roughly 160 miles northwest of Little Rock and about 57 miles south of Fayetteville, the city of Fort Smith typically experiences mild to moderately warm (and occasionally hot) weather in the early fall season, and wetter conditions generally in the fall than in the late summer. In September, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 85°F and 63°F, while rainfall amounts average just over 3.6 inches for the month.
