Arkansas > Soaring Wings Half Marathon

Just over 1,500 runners crossed the finish line at the fall 2011 running of Conway's Soaring Wings Half Marathon, which takes runners on an out-and-back loop course of this northern Arkansas town that lies just a short drive north of Little Rock, and whose 2009 running served as the Half Marathon Championship race for the Arkansas chapter of the Road Runners Clubs of America.
From the starting line near the McGee Center on College Avenue, runners follow a course that unfolds almost entirely along paved roads through Conway's city streets and neighborhoods, with the exception of one stretch of trails between miles 1 and 2, along the city's Tucker Creek Trail.
Set just a few miles east of the Arkansas River which winds its way around the city, the course takes runners within a few blocks of the University of Central Arkansas campus as well as past three of the green, tree-lined golf courses and country clubs around the edges of the city.
Race organizers add that while much of the course is fast and flat, there are some rolling uphill and downhill stretches that runners can expect to encounter along the course, though none are exceptionally challenging.
Proceeds from the race benefit the locally based Soaring Wings Ranch, a Christian home for children "who need a chance," as organizers note, which helps children who are from environments in which they've been abused, abandoned or neglected receive the support, care and structure they need.
Race Weather & Climate
Located in central Arkansas, just over 30 miles north of Little Rock, the city of Conway typically experiences mild to moderately warm fall seasons, which are a welcome relief from the usually quite hot summers the area typically sees every year.
In October, temperatures average between 50°F and 75°F, while rainfall amounts average just over 4 inches for the month. On the day of the race (Oct. 26), the average low is 46°F and the average high is 71°F.
