Event Details

More than 700 runners, walkers and wheelchair competitors came out to take part in both races at the spring 2009 running of the Avenue of the Vines Half Marathon & 5K, which takes the field of participants along a course through the gently rolling hills of Northern California's wine country region, nestled in the hills about 50 miles south of Sacramento. Considered well-suited for first-time half-marathon runners, this race's fast and flat course follows a simple, out-and-back rectangular loop course among the vineyards and mustard seed fields of the Lodi-Stockton, Calif., area.

The 2009 race marked just the third annual running of the race, which starts and finishes at the Woodbridge Winery, near the intersection of Woodbridge Road and Kennefick Road near Youngstown. From there, runners follow a clockwise course entirely on paved surfaces, traveling northward along Kennefick Road all the way to East Collier Road, where they turn right (east) and head toward North Buck Road.

From there, runners start the trek south back toward the finish line, heading southward for a long stretch along North Bruella Road all the way to East Orchard Road. Runners have a couple more turns, onto Dustin Road and Woodbridge Road, before reaching the final stretch toward the finish line just past the starting line on Woodbridge Road. Organizers distribute six aid stations along the course -- one every two miles -- and in addition to the 13.1-mile half marathon and the 5K race, there is also a kids' quarter-mile run, all of which start at 8:00 AM.

Considered a walker-friendly course by race organizers -- both the half marathon and the 5K are open to runners, walkers and wheelchair/handcrack participants -- it is also attractive for all runner skill levels, thanks to its flat course and mild climate. At the finish, all participants receive a free t-shirt, finishers medal and a commemorative wine glass, to enjoy the free wine tasting at the finish line post-race party.
