Details
Featuring a route that takes runners along a combination of downtown
city
streets, packed dirt horse trails through Griffith Park and bike paths
along the Los Angeles
River, the City of Angeles Half Marathon is scheduled to mark its fourth annual running
in early December 2009. Run along a point-to-point course that starts
near the Los Angeles Zoo and finishes at the downtown Civic Center,
this race is mostly fast and flat, with a gradual downhill from the
start to the finish line and live music from bands stationed all along
the 13.1-mile race route.
Runners start the race just off the Zoo parking lot in Griffith Park,
and run the first four miles of the race inside the park along Crystal
Springs Drive and Griffith Park Drive, passing through the middle of
the Harding and Wilson Municipal Golf Course twice, on the way down to
the mile 2 marker and on the way back out of the park. After reaching
the mile 4 marker back at the zoo, runners then exit the park and head
out onto the Griffith Park Trail along the park's eastern edge for the
next mile or so of the race.
The course crosses over the river at the Los Feliz Boulevard bridge,
and then heads along the eastern bank of the river (which is made of
concrete and serves as a flood drainage canal) along the paved bike
trail. Runners follow the bike path all the way down to the Hyperion
Bridge, where they turn right and take Glendale Boulevard across the
bridge over into the Silver Lake area, and follow the course along
Hyperion Avenue to Rowena Avenue, and then turn right onto Silver Lake
Drive, where they start the stretch of the race that passes by the
Ivanhoe and Silver Lake reservoirs.
The next section of the race, between mile markers and 8 and 10, take
runners through a mix of gritty downtown neighborhoods and L.A.'s
glamorous streets, as the course runs along Silver Lake Boulevard and
Sunset Boulevard on its way toward Echo Park. The views along this
stretch can be quite capitvating, as they show off the city from on
high and allow runners to look out onto the city's skyline as they run
toward downtown.
As the final three miles of the race unfold through Echo Park, runners
follow the course alongside the edge of Echo Lake and then head out
onto Bellevue Avenue (and hit a brief uphill) and then Temple Street,
and head toward the race's
final turns onto Figueroa and 2nd Street, toward the finish line at the
L.A. Civic Center. Runners who are driving to the course are encouraged
to leave their cars at the finish line area, and shuttle transportation
to the starting line is provided by the race organizers starting at
5:00 AM -- organizers also recommend taking the city's MTA public
transit to the starting line.
