Event Details

The late weeks of winter bring what is known locally as the unofficial kickoff event of the Northern California running & walking season, the Davis Stampede Half Marathon welcomes more than 3,000 runners, walkers and joggers each year to this out-and-back loop course that takes participants through the city streets of Davis and through its several of its urban parks and greenspaces. Now well into its third decade as a local running tradition, the race -- which will celebrate its 27th annual running in 2009 -- also includes a 10K and a 5K run, and half-mile and quarter-mile "races" for kids.

Largely fast and flat and run entirely on paved surfaces along the city streets of Davis, the race begins near Central Park, at the intersection of 3rd and D Streets. From there, the route takes runners along a mostly long straightaway for the first couple of miles along 3rd and 2nd Streets, all the way up to the second mile marker, where the course turns left (north) and takes runners for the next three miles up into Mace Ranch Park, Slide Hill Park and the neighborhoods surrounding the parks.

After touring through those neighborhoods, runners pass the mile 5 marker and then head south again, crossing Interstate 80 toward the section of the race that follows a route through Willow Creek Park, along El Macero Drive, Mace Boulevard and Montgomery Avenue. This section takes runners through miles 6, 7 and 8, and runs through Willow Creek Park on its way toward Callow Boulevard and Chiles Boulevard, which leads to the final third of the race through Playfields Park and Walnut Park. After exiting those parks, runners follow the stretch of the course that runs alongside Putah Creek, which flows through the arboretum at the University of California-Davis.

The course then takes runners along Research Park Drive, 1st Street and A Street on its way back to the finish line at Central Park, where the post-race festivities -- including health product exhibitors and vendor booths in addition to plenty of food and refreshments -- will be held. Runners will start their race at 8:00 AM and are expected to reach the finish line within 3 1/2 hours, or at least by 11:30 AM. The 10K and 5K races start at 8:15 AM, followed by the kids' races at 11:00 AM.
