Details
Named for the four bridges that runners cross on their way along this
out-and-back loop course through the dense old growth oak forests and
wildlife habitat of Folsom's Lake Natoma area, the Four Bridges Half
Marathon & 3-Person Relay offers one of California's most
scenic races, as runners complete their race within view of peaceful
Lake Natoma for virtually the entire route, along the bicycling trail
that circles the lake and with shaded paths for much of the race.
Runners start the race at the Folsom Community Center on 52 Natoma
Street near Folsom City Park, and run on paved city streets for roughly
the first mile of the course, turning on Coloma Street, Sutter Street,
Reading Street and Folsom Boulevard before heading onto the bike trail
that follows the shoreline of Lake Natoma. Once on the bike path,
runners enter the shaded wooded parkland areas of Lake Natoma, and will
experience a mostly flat course around the lake, with a few rolling
hills here and there (as well as a downhill first mile and an uphill
stretch for the final mile toward the finish).
Throughout the course around the lake, the surface is paved bike
trails, whose narrow width means that runners will be started off in
waves so as not to clog the trails with too much runner traffic, as
race organizers expect up to 3,000 entrants for the race. Runners will
be expected to finish the race in less than three hours (2:45 to be
exact), which means that participants will need to keep a pace of at
most 12:30 minutes per mile.
The "four bridges" that runners will cross during the race occur at
(approximately) mile markers 3.5, 5, 7 and near the end of the race, at
the Walker Street Bridge that runners cross on their way to the finish
line at Folsom's Rodeo Park. Organized by the Sacramento Long Distance
Running Association, the race is considered a great training run for
the California International Marathon two months later in December 2008.
