Event Details

The second of two races that take runners through Chico's historic Bidwell Park, whose 3,618 acres shoulder both sides of the Big Chico Creek Canyon, the Hooker Oak Trail Half Marathon features a challenging trail run along the park trail by the same name, along rugged, rocky and hilly terrain with plenty of obstacles and steep uphills and downhills thrown in throughout the race. Now in its second annual running, the race offers a kind of autumn bookend to the Bidwell Classic Half Marathon & 5K, which takes place in the park each spring.

From the starting line at the city's Hooker Oak Recreation Area, located at 1928 Manzanita Avenue, the course takes runners along Bidwell Park's Upper and Lower Yahi Trails, which runs alongside the creek that runs through the canyon and the park. Runners also get a chance to run along a stretch of the park's Middle Trail, a lesser-trafficked and more rugged section of the park's trails, and run past swimming areas in the park like Brown's Hole, Salmon Hole and Horseshoe Lake, a year-round popular spot for fishing.

One of Northern California's smaller running events, the race is limited to 250 entrants, so those thinking of running the race are encouraged to sign up early. Race day registration will be available, but only if the race has not sold out and spots are still available. Runners also are encouraged to wear trail shoes for tackling the course's often difficult terrain, and the race starts at 8:00 AM.
