Event Details

The majestic redwood forests of Northern California's Humboldt Redwoods State Park serve as the backdrop for the Humboldt Redwoods Marathon & Half Marathon, which will mark its 29th annual running in the fall of 2008 along a course that takes runners along the appropriately named Avenue of the Giants highway, in the shadow of coast redwood and Giant Sequoia trees that line the road, many of which reach more than 200 feet in the air and are more than a thousand years old.

Runners in both the full and half marathons share the same starting time and location, at 9:00 AM inside the park at the Dyersville Bridge, which spans the south fork of the Eel River. After crossing over the river, runners in the 13.1-mile half marathon follow the course southward along the Avenue of the Giants, running all the way past Weott and the town of Burlington to the half-way turnaround point, where the field then turns around and heads back toward the finish line along the same course they've just run.

For those running the half-marathon, the course is mostly even terrain throughout, with a couple of gentle hills between mile markers 2 and 3 and just after mile marker 10. (For those running the full, 26.2-mile marathon, the course is markedly hillier in the second half of the race, with the biggest hill occuring around mile 20.) The terrain for the race is paved surfaces from beginning to end, and most of the race is shaded by the canopy of redwood trees along the route.

The park, which is located in the northwestern corner of the state about 200 miles north of San Francisco, is a popular spot for Californians who wish to get away from it all for fishing, canoeing, swimming and hiking, as the park boasts more than 100 miles of hiking trails throughout its 52,000 acres. It's also home to one of California's largest groves of old-growth coast redwood trees, which race organizers work to raise awareness for through their support of Save The Redwoods, a local nonprofit that seeks to preserve and protect these natural treasures.

Race organizers add that they welcome both runners and walkers in the half marathon, and note that participants will need to keep a pace of at most 22:54 minutes per mile, whether they're running or walking. The Avenue of the Giants roadway will reopen to traffic starting at 2:00 PM, so participants who have not completed their race within five hours will need to be aware of traffic as they finish.

Race Weather & Climate

Humboldt Redwoods State Park normally receives up to about 65 inches of rainfall each year, with most of that rain coming in October and May. In the fall and winter, temperatures in the park average in the 50s and 60s, with the occasional day in the lower 70s.
