Event Details

Set for its inaugural running in the fall of 2009 along the shoreline of this beautifully scenic lake that doubled as the site for the canoeing and rowing events in 1984's Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the Lake Casitas Half Marathon & 5K will take runners along the rolling country roads, bike paths and trails that wind around the lake and through nearby Ojai, for a race that will also serve as a fundraiser for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Runners will start the race along the northeast corner of the lake, and follow what is mostly a clockwise loop course around the roads and paths just to the north and west of the lake, along Santa Ana Road, Baldwin Road, North Ventura Avenue and Santa Ana Boulevard on their way back to the start/finish line area. Just as runners are making their way toward the finish, the course will make a roughly two-mile-long out-and-back run along the lake's edge, taking runners along dirt roads that offer nice breezes coming off the water.

The race's first five miles or so take runners over paved roads (including the stretches along Santa Ana Road and Baldwin Road); after that, runners veer off the highway and onto the wide, tree-lined bike path that parallels North Ventura (Highway 33) for approximately the next two and a half miles. Runners should expect rolling hills throughout the race, with the biggest downhill and uphill stretch coming around the middle of the race, at roughly the 6.5-mile point along the course.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along Southern California's Pacific coastline, just south of the Los Padres National Forest and nearly 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles, the town of Ojai typically experiences mild to moderately cool weather in the mid-fall season, with mostly dry weather throughout the year, except during the late fall and winter months. In November, the area's average monthly temperatures range between 74°F and 40°F, while rainfall totals average just over 1.4 inches for the month.

Fees
