Event Details

Now celebrating its 14th annual running in 2009, the half-marathon race event in the Lake Tahoe Marathon is just one of this big event's series of running and outdoor events throughout the weekend. The event organizers offer full marathons on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as well as bike races, a triple marathon and even a super-triple marathon (one 26.2-mile marathon each day for two days, plus a 72-mile ultramarathon on the 3rd day). With five days filled with golfing, running, walking, kayaking, relay and kids' events, the Lake Tahoe Marathon & Half Marathon weekend is probably unique among U.S. races of its kind in the sheer scale and number of events going on simultaneously during the weekend.

The site for the event is the beautiful shores of California's Lake Tahoe, of course, on the state's eastern border with Nevada, which provides plenty of scenic -- and rugged -- terrain for the weekend's race events. The half-marathon begins at 10:30 AM (it's timed to allow the full marathon participants time to run by) and takes runners from the city streets of Lake Tahoe downhill for the first two miles, then on an uphill climb. After the hill, the course follows rolling terrain for the next few miles, and includes sights such as Eagle Falls and Inspiration Point, famous for its scene in the Meg Ryan movie "City of Angels."

While the elevation for the race course is high -- the half marathon course begins at an elevation of about 6,500 feet above sea level and reaches a peak elevation of just over 6,800 feet above sea level -- the only hills runners will encounter during the race occur between the mile 3 and mile 7 markers. But they're seriously challenging hills, nicknamed the "Hill from Hell" by race organizers, particularly the first section of the hill that runners start climbing starting around the third mile marker, and which rises by about 520 feet by the time runners reach the top of the hill.

After about a mile and a half of rolling terrain along the top of the hill, the next several miles of the course are all downhill along the area bike trail, and takes runners over Taylor Creek Bridge toward the finish, and along the water's edge through the Pope and Valhalla Historical Estates. The finish line is at Tahoe's Pope Beach, where cold water -- as well as an official event wind shirt and plenty of cold beer -- await all runners who cross the finish line.

With such a huge set of events for the weekend, race organizers add that they welcome anyone who wants to participate in the Lake Tahoe half marathon in any way they wish -- so the race is open to runners, walkers and joggers alike, and begins at 10:40 AM.
