California > Mission Inn Run Half Marathon, 10K, 5K & Kids Run
Riverside, CA • Sunday, November 9, 2014 • Course Map
More than 3,000 runners and walkers cross the finish line each year -- including around 600 finishers in the half marathon race alone -- at the annual fall running of Riverside's Mission Inn Run, which features a half marathon in addition to its 10K run, 5K run/walk and its 1K and 1/2K races for kids.
The race's 2014 running will be its 37th annual, and will take both runners and walkers out again on a tour of this city that lies just an hour's drive east from Los Angeles.
Set among the area known as Southern California's "Inland Empire," Riverside offers a largely fast and flat course with mostly very gradual uphills and downhills throughout the race's 13.1-mile half marathon route, punctuated only occasionally by steeper hills, most notably in the race's early going and near the end, between the last couple of miles. The race follows what is basically an out-and-back course that starts near the intersection of Market and 5th Streets and finishes just a couple of blocks away, along Mission Inn Avenue.
In between the starting and finish lines, the race takes runners through two of Riverside's major city parks, including Fairmount Park, which was designed by legendary landscape designer Frederick Law Olmstead (who designed New York City's Central Park and Prospect Park) and features lakes and a golf course in addition to long stretches along the Santa Ana River, which flows through the city past both Fairmount and nearby Mount Rubidoux Parks.
From the starting line, runners follow what is roughly a U-shaped route along Market Street, Redwood Drive and Mt. Rubidoux Drive for the first three miles before heading around the southernmost edges of Mt. Rubidoux Park.
Runners encounter what is probably the race's biggest hill between mile markers 1 and 2 as they're making their way from Market Street across Lake Evans onto Redwood Drive, which they follow south all the way down to the southern edge of Mount Rubidoux Park. Once around the park, they start a long straightaway stretch along the riverside bike paths, also called the Santa Ana River Trail.
They'll follow the Santa Ana River Trail -- a paved biking, walking and running trail which stretches all the way from Huntington Beach on the Pacific Ocean to the Orange County Line in Riverside -- for roughly the next four miles northward along the banks of the river, until they reach the turnaround point between miles 7 and 8.
Once there, they then head back south along the path almost all the way to Buena Vista Avenue. Just before hitting Buena Vista, runners turn left and head east along the bike path through Fairmount Park, toward Dexter Drive.
The last couple of miles of the race take runners back out of the park areas and back into Riverside's city center, along 3rd and Market Streets to the final turn onto Mission Inn Avenue, where the finish line lies.
Weather & Climate
Located along the Santa Ana River in Southern California, just over 58 miles east of Los Angeles, the city of Riverside typically experiences cool (and occasionally cold) to moderately warm weather conditions in the mid-fall season, and usually sees dry weather throughout most of the year.
In November, temperatures average between 45°F and 74°F -- on the day of the race (Nov. 9), the average low is 48;F and the average high is 76°F -- while rainfall totals average just over three quarters of an inch for the month.
