California > Napa Valley Silverado Half Marathon & 5K
Calistoga, CA • Sunday, April 22, 2012 • Course Map
Part of a series of more than a dozen trail and road races that take place throughout some of the most gorgeous natural locations in Northern California each year, Enviro Sports' Napa Valley Silverado Half Marathon & 5K race makes its inaugural run from the streets of Calistoga in the northern Napa Valley and into the hills, wineries and vineyards that lie just east of town.
"The Trail," as the onetime stagecoach trail that now stretches out as a highway east from Calistoga is known to locals, is the less-traveled cousin of nearby Highway 29, which is often clogged with traffic by visitors to the wineries here in Napa Valley on the weekends. The Silverado Trail is full of hills and is considered excellent both for driving and for cycling, and offers up gorgeous views of both the valley and the wineries, of which there are many along the trail, from Sterling and Luna Vineyards to Rancho de las Flores and Clos du Val.
Runners will start the out-and-back course for the half marathon in downtown Calistoga along Lake Street, in front of Palisades High School -- and they'll finish the race just a stone's throw from the start, on the school's athletic complex running track. From there, the race route first heads north along Lake Street for a few blocks until it meets up with Highway 29; here, runners then turn right and head onto the Silverado Trail, which they'll remain on for the next six miles.
Along this stretch, runners basically follow a long, out-and-back route along the Trail, winding along as the roadway curves with the mountains on one side and the vineyards in the valley below on the other side. They'll make the run all the way out to where Silverado Trail intersects with Crystal Springs Road, which is the half-way turnaround point. After making the turn, they repeat the route they've just run in reverse, getting to see the valley and the mountains a second time as they make their way back into Calistoga for the race finish.
Organizers note that the course is considered "flat and fast, with only two minor hills," which will make the scenery that much more enjoyable, especially with the course's views of Mount Saint Helena and the Palisades Mountains off in the distance. It's also limited to 1,000 entrants, so runners interested in taking part in the race are encouraged to sign up early. The scheduled starting time for the race is 8:00 AM, and runners will have 3 1/2 hours to complete their 13.1 miles.
