Details
With 16 miles of trails that are used year-round by mountain bikers,
horseback riders, walkers, joggers, runners and more, California's
Skyline Wilderness Park is perhaps the perfect setting for the Napa
Valley Stomp Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, a trail running event
that takes runners along a very hilly and challenging trail route that
features steep climbs and descents as well as a mix of races to suit
both novice trail runners as well as for those with plenty of
experience in these kinds of races, who
consider themselves intermediate or even advanced trail runners.
Organized by the local race event company Sierra-Cascade Adventure
Racing Sports, the race starts and finishes in the parking lot area of
Skyline Wilderness Park, just off Imola Road, with staged starts for
each race -- runners in the half marathon start their race at 8:30 AM,
while those in the 10K start at 9:00 AM and those running the 5K start
at 9:15 AM. Once they cross the starting line, participants immediately
start climbing upward along the park trails, rising from an elevation
of roughly 100 feet above sea level at the start to just above 650 feet
above sea level by the time they reach the first mile marker.
Runners
will reach a peak of over 900 feet above sea level at the race's
highest point (a little beyond midway between mile markers 3 and 4)
before starting a long, steady and steep descent over the next few
miles on the way to the 6.5-mile point in the race. At this point,
those running the 10K have completed their race; those running the half
marathon will run this same course a second time to complete their 13.1
miles.
Along this difficult, hilly course, runners should expect to encounter
plenty of what you'd expect at any trail race, including tree roots,
rocky terrain, some areas shaded and others exposed to the sun, and
some wet and muddy areas, depending on the previous days' weather. The
views, however, make it all worthwhile -- Napa Valley and its
surrounding hills and vineyards, through tree-lined trails and meadows
filled with grasslands and wildflowers.
