California > Napa Wine Country Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K
Calistoga, CA  •  Saturday, October 26, 2013  •  Course Map

Challenging, hilly and beautifully scenic, the Napa Wine Country Trail Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K takes runners on a tour of the hills, babbling streams and trails of Calistoga's Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, called a local treasure by many and located just minutes from the town's many restaurants and wineries.

Throughout the park's lush single-track trails, runners will traverse dirt and sometimes rocky hiking trails, all the while surrounded by majestic redwood, oak, madrone and bay forests. Just under 280 runners crossed the finish line in all three race distances combined in 2012, including 137 finishers in the half marathon alone.

From the starting line at the park's picnic area, runners in the half-marathon will run the roughly six-mile course twice, following an out-and-back loop route along the park's Coyote Peak Trail, South Fork Trail, Ritchey Canyon Trail and Redwood Trail, running alongside the waters of Ritchey Creek for much of the early and later parts of the race.

Once those running the 13.1-mile course reach the aid station back at the picnic area -- the half-marathon half-way point -- they turn around and run the same course a second time.

Runners will be expected to keep a pace of at most 13:45 minutes per mile (gauged for the full marathon distance), as there is a six-hour time limit for the race. Runners are also encouraged to carry water bottles with them during the race, as much of the course is in remote mountain areas within the park, as an aid station will be available only at the park picnic area.

Race Weather & Climate

Set in the heart of the Napa Valley wine country region, the town of Calistoga lies a little over an hour and a half's drive from San Francisco, and tends to experience cool, wet winters and warm (sometimes hot), dry summers.

In October, temperatures average between 46°F and 79°F, while rainfall amounts average just under 2 inches for the month. On the day of the race (Oct. 26), the average low is 44°F and the average high is 76°F.
