Event Details

More than 230 runners turned out for all three races combined at the first-ever running of the Nitro Trail Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, which takes runners on the fire trails and biking & walking paths that wind through the Point Pinole Regional Shoreline Park, whose plentiful eucalyptus tree groves, bluffs and sandy beaches point out into the San Pablo Bay, just a stone's throw from the nearby Bay Area cities of San Pablo, Pinole and Richmond.

With the exception of a few brief stretches along the park's paved walking paths, most of the race takes runners along the natural surface fire trails through the park, and the out-and-back course features ample views of the shoreline as well as the waters of San Pablo Bay, on which sailboats and ships of all varieties are a common sight. Depending on the visibility, off in the distance runners may also be able to see the Marin Shoreline and Mount Tamalpais.

Many of the trails throughout the park's 2,315 acres are shaded by groves of eucalyptus trees, planted decades ago as a buffer for the park's original purpose, as a manufacturing site for gunpowder and dynamite. Re-opened as a public park in 1973, Point Pinole is now part of the area's East Bay Regional Park district, and also features marshlands, breezy wide-open meadows and a fresh water pond along the park's miles of trails.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the part of the San Franciso Bay area known as the Easy Bay, and roughly a 23-mile drive northeast from downtown San Francisco, the town of Pinole typically experiences mild to moderately warm weather in the spring, and much drier conditions in the late spring when the race is held than in the winter months, when the area usually experiences its wettest weather. In May, the town's average monthly temperatures range between 68°F and 51°F, while rainfall amounts average just over half an inch for the month.
