Details
As the fifth and final running event in a series of trail races run
throughout the year -- starting in April in Bear Mountain, N.Y., and
continuing through the year in Seattle, Washington D.C. and Madison,
Wis. -- San Francisco's December running of the North Face Endurance
Challenge trail race is the series championship race, and features a
50-mile, 50K and 10K race in addition to the 13.1-mile half marathon
through the hilly, challenging and stunningly beautiful Marin Headlands
just across the Golden Gate Bridge from the city.
Those who choose to tackle the half-marathon distance in this race will
have four hours to complete the course's 13.1 miles, which start and
finish in the Marin Headlands and take runners on a winding trail
through the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the largest
urban parks in the world. Most of the course, race organizers add, is
run along the park's natural and gravel-surface fire roads, and
features repeated (and often steep) uphill and downhill stretches,
which runners are encouraged to train for so they're well-prepared for
the challenging terrain.
Runners in the half marathon will start their race at 9:00 AM, after
those running the 50-mile and 50K races have started their courses at
5:00 AM and 7:00 AM, respectively. Along with the hills, runners will
also get to see plenty of views of the Pacific Ocean along the trails,
and occasional sightings of the Golden Gate Bridge, organizers say.

Weather & Climate
Known for its typically windy weather and relatively mild conditions
virtually year-round, with occasional unpredictable bouts of cold
weather even in the summer, San Francisco tends to experience cool to
cold conditions in the winter, with ample rainfall compared to the
summer when conditions are mostly dry. In December, average monthly
temperatures range between 59°F and 47°F, while
rainfall totals average around 3.18 inches for the month.
