California > Northern California Marathon & Half Marathon
San Jose, CA  •  Sunday, September 16, 2012  •  Course Map

Set for its second annual running in mid-September 2012 along the streets and urban parkland trails of the unofficial capital of Silicon Valley here near the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay, the Northern California Marathon & Half Marathon features a mostly fast and flat out-and-back course through the city that starts and finishes in San Jose's Guadalupe River Park.

Runners in both the full and the half marathons share the same starting and finish line, which lies in the part of the park known as Arena Green, which lies near the HP Pavilion concert and sports arena. From there, the half marathon route takes runners first through the city streets of San Jose for roughly the first five miles of the course, starting out by heading west along The Alameda toward Shasta-Hanchett Park.

The course follows a few turns through the neighborhood -- on Race Street, Park Avenue, Hanchett Avenue and then back onto Alameda -- before heading back east toward the starting line at Arena Green, and underneath the Guadalupe Parkway. Another brief out-and-back stretch along Almaden Boulevard is followed by turns onto Santa Clara Street and North Market Street, which leads runners northward toward the Guadalupe River Park, the three-mile-long park that runs alongside the river of the same name right through the heart of the city's downtown.

The rest of the half marathon route unfolds through the park, which takes runners off the paved roads and onto the park's hard-packed trails. Both the half and the full marathons start at 7:30 AM, and runners can relax after the race at the event's finish line festival around the Arena Green until 3:00 PM.

With the exception of a hilly stretch at the start of the race, organizers say that most of the 13.1-mile half marathon course is flat and fast, especially in the later miles that unfold along the Guadalupe River Park trails. Just over 60 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined at the event's inaugural running in 2011, including 42 finishers in the half marathon.

On the day of the race (Sept. 16), the average high is 80°F and the average low is 57°F.
