Event Details

More than 7,000 runners came out and competed in the 2008 running of the Avia Orange County Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K & Kids Run, which takes runners on a point-to-point racing tour of Irvine, starting at the Newport Center near Newport Bay and following all the way to the finish at the Greater Irvine Spectrum Center, which runners will recognize when they see the center's giant ferris wheel looking over the city in the distance.

From the starting line at the Newport Center, runners follow a mostly flat and fast course along paved surfaces through the city, running along San Miguel Drive, Bonita Canyon Drive, Culver Drive, University Drive and the Yale Loop on the way to Woodbridge Community park and the San Diego Creek, which takes runners along the last few miles of the race toward the Barranca Parkway to the finish line at the Spectrum Center.

Like much of the rest of the terrain in this part of Southern California, the race course has a few gently rolling hills but is otherwide largely flat -- overall, the course experiences no more than a 100-ft. change in elevation throughout the 13.1 miles of the race. Runners will hit the highest points in the race around the mile 1 and mile 3 markers, as well as the last mile in toward the finish line. This makes the course an excellent choice for both walkers and wheelchair/handcrank racers, whom race organizers encourage to sign up and participate.

All participants -- runners, walkers and wheelchair competitors alike -- are required to finish within the race's seven-hour time limit in order to have their finishing times counted officialy in the event record. The marathon and half-marathon will start at 7:30 AM for walkers and runners, and wheelchair participants will start at 7:28 AM.
