Event Details

More than 940 runners crossed the finish line in the half-marathon alone at the spring 2009 running of San Pedro's Palos Verdes Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K, which celebrates its 44th anniversary in 2010 and which race organizers bill as the country's second-oldest marathon running event, next to the legendary Boston Marathon.

Run over a course filled with rolling hills, tree-lined streets and gorgeous views of the waves of the Pacific Ocean crashing against the shore, the race gives runners everything they might expect when they're coming to run a race along the Southern California coast.

The race starts and finishes with a view of the water, in San Pedro's Point Fermin Park just south of downtown, near Cabrillo Beach Park. From there, the course takes runners on a course that brings its first serious hill (which past participants label simply as "the Hill") around the second mile marker, as runners hit the section of the course along South Western Avenue. The race follows an out-and-back course, taking runners past locally famous sights like the Donald's Trump National Golf Course and Wayfarer's Chapel, a famous open wood-and-glass chapel designed by Lloyd Wright, the son of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Just past the Wayfarer's Chapel, runners hit the turnaround point and begin heading back toward the finish line, retracing their steps along the course they've just run. The middle stretches of the race feature plenty of rolling hills, past runners report, with a mixture of short and steep hills as well as longer, more gradual ones. The last couple miles of the race are all downhill, and include the turn at the final mile of the race known as "the chute," which serves as a kind of marker to let runners know they've hit the home stretch and are almost at the finish line.

Those running in the full and half marathons begin their races at 7:00 AM and 7:30 AM, respectively, while those running or walking the 5K start their race at 8:00 AM. More than 1,800 runners and walkers completed the race in all three events combined in 2009, a number that allows the race both an energetic feeling as well as a comfortable, more intimate-size field of participants without the crush of runners that sometimes can be found at larger events.

Race Weather & Climate

Set along the Pacific coastline of Southern California, about a half-hour drive from downtown Los Angeles, the town of San Pedro enjoys mild to moderately warm weather virtually throughout the year, with very little rainfall in the spring and summer. In May, average monthly temperatures range between 72°F and 55°F, while rainfall totals average just over a quarter of an inch.
