California > Raptor Ridge Half Marathon
Escondido, CA  •  Sunday, October 13, 2013  •  Course Map

Organized by Dirt Devil Racing, a San Diego-based race management company that also hosts running events like April's annual Painted Rocks Half Marathon, the Raptor Ridge Half Marathon takes runners on a challenging trail run through the hills and valleys of the San Dieguito River Park and the San Diego Safari Park, part of the San Diego Zoo.

Runners will follow an out-and-back course for the 13.1-mile race that starts and finishes just off Sunset Drive in Escondido, and takes runners on a combination of old Jeep roads through the San Dieguito River Valley and mountain trails that wind up the ridgeline known as Raptor Ridge, along which runners will make their way past boulders stationed on the grassy hills, and will be able to look out onto the valley below.

The first part of the course -- about 4 1/2 miles -- unfolds over what is mostly flat and fast roads through the park, and then runners hit the portion of the trail that takes them up the single-track trails toward Raptor Ridge, which organizers note will be challenging for both experienced and beginner trail runners. From there, the course then flattens out as runners make their way to the turnaround point, after which they'll reach the crest and then begin the trek back down into the valley toward the finish line.

The starting time for the race is 7:00 AM, and runners will have three hours to complete the race. Organizers also strongly emphasize that runners will need to bring their own water bottles with them to ensure they have adequate hydration out there with themselves on the course -- this is mandatory for participating in the event.
