California > Express Jet Inland Empire Half Marathon - Riverside
Riverside, CA

Date

Sunday, September 14, 2008
Cancelled for 2008

Event Details

Formerly part of the Riverside Sister Cities Marathon & Half Marathon running event, which celebrated this California city's affiliation with its sister city Sendai in Japan, the newly renamed Express Jet Inland Empire Half Marathon in Riverside is now part of a running series that also includes road races in Temecula and Ontario, Calif. Much like its former incarnation -- which itself was a new race in 2007 -- the IE Half in Riverside will take runners through the city's historic downtown Mission district, past a number of local parks and attractions.

Runners start the race at 6:30 AM near the intersection of Orange and 6th Streets, and follow an out-and-back course that takes them in a largely counter-clockwise direction around the city. The race's first couple of miles take the field along city streets and into Fairmont Park, where runners follow the course around the banks of Lake Evans, which sits right inside the middle of the park. These early miles in the race -- like those in the final third of the race or so -- are mostly fast and flat, with only a few gently rolling hills here and there along the course.

The course becomes hiller in its middle stretch, which winds along the banks of the Santa Ana River, past Mt. Rubidoux Park and McLean Anza Narrows Park, where the course makes the turn from the parks and urban greenspace areas along the river back into a more urban setting through Riverside's city streets and neighborhoods again. As the course takes runners along Grand Avenue, Palm Avenue and Pine Street on the way toward the finish line, the course evens out again, with long flat straightaway stretches toward the finish line back at Orange Street.

Participants in the event will be limited to 3 1/2 hours for the 13.1-mile half marathon, and there are also a 5K race for runners and walkers as well as a series of half- and quarter-mile races for kids, which begin at 9:00 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in Southern California about 55 miles due east of Los Angeles (about an hour's drive from L.A.), the city of Riverside tends to see hot, dry summers and milder, wetter weather in the winter. In September, average local monthly temperatures range between 91°F and 60°F, while rainfall is rare, averaging just over a quarter of an inch for the month.
