Details
Set for its second annual running in the fall of 2009, the Run The
River Marathon, Half Marathon & Ultramarathon takes
runners along the American River Parkway, a roughly 30-mile-long
biking, hiking, running and recreational trails that follows the river
of the same name between Folsom and Sacramento, and features
beautifully scenic views of the river as well as runs through several
local parks between the race start and finish lines.
More than 400 runners crossed the finish line in all four races
combined at the event's fall 2008 running, which followed the same
course that will be used in 2009, a point-to-point course that begins
at William Pond Park, located just off Arden Way, for those running the
13.1-mile race. (Those running the full, 26.2-mile marathon start their
race at Negro Bar, located further east along the river, while those
running in the ultramarathon start their race at Beals Point in nearby
Granite Bay.)
From William Pond Park, the half marathon runners follow a
point-to-point course that follows a winding route in tandem with the
American River, all the way to Discover Park near Sacramento, which
also marks the confluence of the American River and the Sacramento
River. All throughout the half-marathon route, which follows a mostly
long, steady descent from the start to the finish -- punctuated by the
course's biggest hills between roughly the mile 4 and mile 6 markers --
with lots of small, rolling hills thrown in along the way.
And though
the ultra- and full marathons start at elevations far above the finish
line elevation, the half marathon starts at just above 50 feet above
sea level and never climbs above that for the remainder of the course.
At the 302-acre Discovery Park, the finish line festivities will
include a chili cook-off that begins at 10:30 AM for all finishers and
their friends, family and supporters.
